Why did you decide to major in physical sciences?
I am interested in investigating and learning about the underlying mechanisms of the physical world that we interact with. Most physical phenomena that we observe, regardless interesting or mundane, can be explained by some physical laws in Physics or are applications of these laws. Even if they cannot be explained (yet, and they are the most interesting cases), you can bet that there will be someone who will dedicate their time to broaden our knowledge of the physical structure of the Universe. Being part of this journey of discovery excites me, and thus I ultimately decided to major in the Physical Sciences.
Why study Physical Sciences in Yale-NUS College?
One of the best things about studying Physical Sciences in Yale-NUS College is the huge amount of interaction you have with your professors. These professors are willing to take time out of their busy schedule just to guide you through the challenges you face in class. Moreover, you can approach them to learn more about their research and the possibility of working with their group. But I think the most important thing about Yale-NUS College is that you do not only learn to be a good physicist, but more importantly, through the Common Curriculum that is unique to Yale-NUS College, you learn to be a well-rounded human who is knowledgeable and compassionate.
What advantages do you think physical sciences majors have after graduation?
Beyond the technical skills that you gain from your classes, a physical science major is equipped with the skills to develop innovative and strategic approaches to solve problems. Furthermore, your ability to draw inspirations from problems in you have encountered in physics can help develop your physical intuitions for problem-solving, making you a more effective problem-solver. Finally, as a physical science major, you also learn how to extract important information and present them in a clear and understandable manner.
